I was reading a "favourite things" post the other day and thought that today would be a nice day to share some of my favourite things, natural body care items to be more specific.
I have been slowly transitioning into using more and more natural products in my day to day life. I have been changing over to something more natural each time I use up an item. I have a new shampoo, soap, cleaning products, and deodorant that I will share today, it can be tough to find products that work for you, especially in the world of natural health products, they are often more expensive, and more variable in the results, luckily I have some tricks to make things more affordable at the end of this post as well!
Best Natural Soap
All Natural Soap from Jaydancin, an organic skin care and make-up shop. This place is a local business that I am absolutely obsessed with! They are doing all kinds of major changes that are so exciting and you should definitely check them out. This soap is completely natural, the ingredients are as clean as they get. On the back of the packaging (which is not wasteful, bonus!) is says something that really resonates with me, their 3 key points about Jaydancin products: 1) Every ingredient we use you can eat, 2) Every ingredient we use comes from the earth, and 3) Every ingredient we use has a purpose and not used as a filler. It really doesn't get much better than that!
I have given this to my friend and boyfriend and both love them! My favourite scent is the local organic goat's milk and local honey one. It smells divine and works great. I also love the orange and tea tree. They always give samples out too, as their products speak for themselves and you wont be spending money on a less than stellar product! I use this as a body soap and as a face wash, the tea tree oil one helps my skin feel so soft and clean.
I have tried a few different shampoos and conditioners that are natural. If you have too you know that some just do not work for you! It is such a challenge, I have used a couple different ones with no success, I have made my own and done the no-poo method as well! Then I was recommended to try this Organic Matter, and it really makes good on their promises! It smells nice, works great and leaves my hair light, shiny and clean. Most other natural products weigh my hair down and it is not a nice feeling! I use level 1 with this brand, and it works perfectly. Although I try to wash my hair as little as possible, since I teach so many Zumba Fitness classes, I get so sweaty and need a good shampoo to keep me feeling clean and fresh! I love this stuff. This company is also Canadian, so I like that too!
For those of you wondering, I have thick, long, blonde hair that is slightly wavy and tends to lean to the greasy roots and dry ends and a bit frizzy. I also work out about 6 times a week and get really really sweaty. I regularly straighten my hair too. Knowing this kind of information might make it easier to determine if it is a product for you to try!
I have only tried a few different options here but I don't know why I bothered because the first option worked best--Homemade! It is just a simple mix of baking soda, coconut oil and arrowroot starch, and I use this recipe here. This stuff is a little weird to apply (I use my fingers and rub it on) but it really does work. I have tried another kind as well which was from a company here in Canada and honesty felt like it made me smellier and more wet all day, it was a bad scene.
For men, my boyfriend likes this brand, it smells great but is pricey!
I have tried a couple different toothpastes, but this one really works for me, Dessert Essence Natural Tea Tree Whitening Plus Toothpaste. I love the feeling after I use it and how fresh it is. I also do think it has helped my teeth stay bright and white. It is fluoride free, SLS free and gluten free and does the job well. Other toothpastes I have tried of the natural variety sometimes have a bit of a weird after taste or are too "paste" like. This one is really great! I have used other Dessert Essence products and have not been overly impressed, but each product is different and you truly have to find what works the best for you!
Best All Purpose Cleaner
I found this recipe and immediately began making it, I love the results. It is so simple, toss citrus peels into a mason jar filled with vinegar, let it sit about ten days then dilute with water and put into a spray bottle. It is anti-bacterial and is the perfect solution for cleaning counters/floors/tubs/sinks! I also feel weird about cleaning the bath tub or counter with chemicals considering I either sit in the tub or use the counters for food preparation. This is a great solution, plus I would normally just throw away the peels of the citrus, this is a great way to reuse the lemon that I squeeze the juice from into my morning cup!
I am working on switching over all my make-up products, so when I do I will post about that. As will all things holisitc health, it truly is about what works for you the best!
Some tips to save some cash on those natural products:
Make your own first--try your hand at making some products like the deodorant or house hold cleaner, this will help you save money because the ingredients are usually cheap. Try the no-poo method or a homemade shampoo (some use honey, or an inexpensive castile soap). You can reduce the recipes significantly to create a test batch. If you really like the homemade version but you don't like actually making them, often local places will make it for you or you can order similar products online once you know it works.
Ask for samples--local places are more likely to give you samples and advice you can count on. They know how much it sucks to spend money on a product that wont work, and I found they will give you free samples or very small portions at a fraction of the cost so you can test out the product. You can get samples of most products you just have to dig a little and find them! Don't be afraid to ask the people at your store to open a bottle and offer samples from it!
Do a ton of research--check out every single review you can. I made this mistake on a deodorant, almost all reviews said it made them smellier and wet all day, and this is what I didn't like too. If I had read more comments I probably would have passed on that product. Check out home reviews and comparisons, ask around, talk to the people in the stores, they might have some advice based on people who have tried it.
Use them less--you don't need to wash your hair daily or wear as much make-up! Reduce your use of these products so they can stretch further!
Slowly make the transition-- I don't believe in ditching everything at once and opting for a whole new set of items, this can be pricy and unpredictable! As you use up an older less-natural product simply replace it with something better for you. If it doesn't work well make the choice to give it to someone else who might benefit or use it up anyways.
Lastly, it is often more expensive to buy these products but the results and impact on our bodies and health is also dramatic and worth the price. I have found my skin to clear up more once switching my hair and facial products and I have so few reactions, this is amazing for me as I have very sensitive skin. Test things out and find that works, make sure you share things with others too so we can all benefit from the products!
What kind of natural products do you use, give me some recommendations! What is the biggest hurdle when changing over to natural products for you?
